December 18 is the birthday of Charles Wesley, less famous brother of John, the founder of Methodism. Charles was considerably Higher Church than his brother, and did not become a Methodist. His huge output of hymns has definitely left its mark on the musical patrimony in general, and the hymnal of 1940 in particular.
